Internet Public Library (IPL) Question & Answer
I answered this question on IPL (http://www.ipl2.org/) for course credit, but enjoyed the ability to test out the skills I had been learning in classes. Before answering real questions for IPL, you must first take an online training course that includes a quiz and answering practice questions for feedback. Once approved, you are allowed to go in and find questions that you feel you are able to answer.
The answer may seem long, however all of the elements included are to make it easier for your patron to follow the path you took to find the answer, and to re-create it themselves.

Question: Can you help me find information the Battle of Washita? I found one website that contained only a little information.
Greetings from IPL2! Thank you for asking your question regarding the
Battle of Washita. I began by doing a general search on http://google.com by searching the terms “Battle of Washita” to see what sources I could locate in this manner. I found the
website that you had listed as having consulted.
After leaving the Google website, I went to the following website, which is the Internet Public Library’s website. http://www.ipl.org/
From this main webpage I entered clicked on the “SpecialCollections Created
by ipl2” button. From the search box at the top, type in the following
terms“Military History”. This will take you to a list of military history
websites. Go down to the 9th option, this is titled “General Military History”.
The website is: http://www.ipl.org/div/pfarch/entry/81345
This is a research guide developed by ipl2. There are several resources in
this guide that should prove to be useful for you. In the web resources
section, the following websites have good information if you type in
“Battle of Washita” as a search term in their search box.
The U.S. Army Center of Military History, with the
website: http://www.history.army.mil/
On the main page, in the upper right corner click the search button. Then type in
“battle of Washita”as your search terms. A number of relevant sources
should appear, with the first 3 being the most relevant to your query. This is
a website that is maintained by the U.S. Army Center of Military History, and as
such is an authoritative website on much of the history of the United States
military and their campaigns.
Another source listed on the pathfinder research guide that may prove helpful to you is an encyclopedia. This resource is only available in print, however if you go to your local
library with the following information they should be able to help you locate a
copy for your research.
The Harper Encycolpedia of Military History:
From 3500 B.C. to the Present. R. Ernest Dupuy and Trevor N. Dupuy,
4thed., HarperCollins, New York, 1993.
This encyclopedia has many chapters that offers brief descriptions of specific battles and
campaigns. This source may also provide you with many other resources if you
check the index contained in the back of the book.
Thank you very much for consulting ipl2 in your quest for research. If you have any
more questions, please come back again!
